Nigeria Security Incidents Report – August 2025

August underscored the volatility of Nigeria's security landscape. Armed groups intensified attacks across key regions, while state forces ramped up counter-terrorism, counter-banditry, and anti-crime operations. Argon.Africa proprietary database recorded 581 fatalities nationwide, spanning civilians, security forces, and actors. Bandit groups represented 40% of total casualties, while civilians accounted for 32%, terrorists (13%), security forces (2%), and other armed actors (13%).

At the subnational level, Zamfara (32%) registered the highest share of fatalities, followed by Borno (17%), Katsina (13%), and Niger (11%). Abduction surged to 506 cases, with rural residents representing an overwhelming 78% of victims. Security incidents totaled 348, of which bandit groups accounted for 38%, criminal elements 21%, and ISWAP 5%. State forces reported 522 arrests, while ransom payments reached ₦100 million, alongside 73 cattle rustled.

These figures reflect a complex environment: intensified state operations reduced some civilian casualties, yet the structural conditions sustaining criminal networks remain entrenched.
